Hereford businesswoman opens letterpress studio and store

Magic Letterpress is run by Michelle Gordon at her Wish You Were Here shop in Bastion Mews.

It sells locally handmade goods, including wood-turned plates, bowls and candlesticks, fabric bunting, table mats and fabric bowls, artisan teddy bears, crocheted pumpkins, as well as all of the letterpress printed items such as cards, posters, prints, badges, bags and bunting.

There is a magical mailbox that’sends the post to the Future’.

“You can write a message on a special card (there are several designs available and they are all printed in-house), address it and write the date that you want to receive it,” said Gordon.

“You then post it in the magical box and it will be delivered at the specified time in the future. It’s a little like a postal time capsule. It is a fun activity to do with children and friends.

“The studio is a place where printers, aspiring printmakers and makers can create their own work and sell it in the shop.

The red list of heritage crafts places letterpress printing in the “endangered” category, which means that there are not enough people practicing it to ensure its survival into the next generation. So I hope that more people will try it out and fall in love, so it can continue to be done for many more decades to come.

Ms Gordon previously ran a studio in the Apple Store Gallery in Rockfield Road and also had a market stall in High Town.

“I offer card printing and posters printing workshops in my letterpress workshop, so that people can come and make their own custom letterpress printed cards and posters.

I also rent out space and equipment to aspiring or beginner printers who are familiar with the process but do not have a large amount of type to create letterpress work. I also do bulk orders for small businesses and shops looking for unique cards in small print runs to sell.

Ms Gordon is editor of Small Printer, the magazine of the British Printing Society.

She said, “I began my letterpress journey in 2019 and have become completely obsessed with creating cards and print on my Adana press, using only antique wood type, metal types and picture blocks.”

Local issues should be the priority and letters should not exceed 250 characters.

“I have a large collection and am eager to share it with other printers.” As an author, I have 21 books in print, the latest one released in July called The Magical Dragon Mirror and is the third in my children’s series.

“My other books are written for adults and cover themes such as angels, fairies, alternate realities, and life after the death.”
