The state requests information from Maricopa County about election issue

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office received a request from the attorney general to answer questions about voting.

PHOENIX — The Election Integrity Unit of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office is asking that Maricopa County provide a full, in-depth report regarding issues with ballot tabulators experienced on Election Day.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office was contacted by the attorney general asking for an explanation from the country about the issues that voters faced while voting on Nov. 8.

The letter stated that the complaints “go beyond pure speculation” and included first-hand witness accounts, which raise concerns about Maricopa County’s legal compliance with Arizona election laws.

Officials from Maricopa County claim that 60 locations had issues with the tabulators printer settings during Election Day.

Although the county claims that the machines were tested on Nov. 7, with no apparent issues, the problem began shortly before Election Day.

“Election workers report that the tabulators began having trouble reading ballots printed on BOD printers in the first thirty minutes of voting Tuesday, November 8, 2022,” said the letter.

According to the unit, due to the numerous reports from workers, observers, and voters, as well as the admission by the county that there were widespread problems, they are asking for more details. They are asking for:

  1. Voting locations that experienced problems with either the ballot-on–demand (BOD), printers, or tabulation
  2. The specific problems at each location where voting is taking place
  3. Any other issues relating to BOD printers/tabulators
  4. A complete log of all changes to the BOD Printer configuration settings
  5. Maricopa County’s standards regarding the BOD configuration settings, as specified in manufacturer technical specifications and/or internal technical specifications
  6. The root cause was found to be non-uniform settings for the printers.
  7. What was the method used to reconfigure or update the printer configuration settings at each vote location? And when were they made the changes?

Maricopa County will also be asked to provide a detailed account of how poll workers were trained in “check-out procedures” as well as a copy each location’s Official Ballot Report, with any discrepancies or explanations.

The attorney general’s office requested that Maricopa County respond before they submit their official canvass to Secretary of State. This must take place on or before November 28.
