Top 5: 3D-Printed Custom Glasses


Good morning everyone, and happy Sunday! We hope you had an enjoyable week and enjoyed our content. In the lead up to Formnext you might especially like our news coverage. We have some exciting videos this week. We have selected an interesting range, from a South Korean factory which utilizes 3D printing to produce custom glasses individual to the user, to SolidCAM’s work with Desktop Metal, as well as information on printing in dentistry, agriculture and more. Top 1: Custom 3D printed glasses

We have this video from a South Korean factory which uses 3D printing for individualized glasses frames. The video shows the process: firstly, they take a 3D scan of the customer’s face and head and calculate the dimensions of the facial features. This is used for the CAD design of the glasses, designed to each person’s individual face. This CAD design can be printed using an HP Laser Sintering Printer. After printing, the parts go through post-processing. It is especially interesting that the glasses can easily be mass produced. The video takes over 10 hours, but multiple pairs can all be printed in that time.

Top 2: SolidCAM Combines CNC Machining and Metal3D Printing

Next up is SolidCAM. In this video, the CAM software company presents their collaboration with Desktop Metal for a hybrid process which combines CNC machining with their 3D printing system, the world’s first Metal Binder Jetting system. This video shows 9 steps in the manufacturing process, from design to printing to post processing. The video shows the finished part in detail so that viewers can appreciate the intricate design and technical finish possible with SolidCAM X Desktop Metal. Top 3: Dentist Discusses 3D Printing

Next up, we have a video dedicated to dental enthusiasts! 3D printing in dentistry has become increasingly popular. It is refreshing to see a video from the dental side to balance the business aspect. This video features Dr Chris Giffin (head of the 3D Printing Dental Association). He presents his top 3D printing software for the dental sector, giving a detailed description of each company’s history, focus and key softwares according to his personal experience as a senior dentist. Bluesky and Meshmixer are among the others on his list. Dr Giffin discusses 3D printing in the sector to make crowns and bridges, dentures, aligners, and bridges. He also explains the advantages of 3D printing over traditional methods.

Top 4: John Deere tries 3D printing parts

You’ve probably seen their logo written on the side of a tractor or cherry picker: John Deere. The company is a well-known producer of agricultural, construction and technological products with locations around the globe. This video shows their additive manufacturing center in Mannheim, Germany where they have started their first AM project. Their team collaborated with GKN Sinter Metals to create the Thermal Diverting Valve 3.0. This was their first 3D-printed metal part. This project was a huge success, with over 4,000 parts produced in one year using this method. This video shows how to design and print parts. Interviews with key players in the project are included to explain their thinking and the benefits of additive manufacturing.



Top 5: Ensinger GmbH – Their Plastic Medical Parts

Next, we have Ensinger GmbH’s video on the medical side. It shows their medical plastic devices solutions. This video shows the full range of products that they offer, including traumatology and hip and shoulder reconstructions. The video then explains the company’s history, including its foundation and headquarters, as well their place in medical industry. The company employs experts in parts manufacturing and has more than 30 locations around the world. They use 3D printing for finished parts manufacturing as well as traditional injection moulding and machining. Ensinger also offers surface treatment, assembly, packaging, labelling. The video also details the quality of their services and parts.
